Dr. Vasanthi Valoo (she/her), Clinical Psychologist, offers individual psychotherapy, couples psychotherapy, psychological assessments, and psychoeducation to individuals 18 years and older. Dr. Valoo’s emphasis of practice is in the assessment and treatment of emotional and cognitive difficulties with adults. Dr. Valoo also provides supervision and consultation to mental health professional trainees who work with adults.
Psychotherapy treatments address a range of issues including trauma, chronic pain, acculturation, anxiety, bereavement, childbirth, childhood abuse, disabilities, depression, employment-related stress, ethnicity and culture, grief, interpersonal relationships, intimacy, loss, parenting, pregnancy, stress, personality disorders, and psychiatric issues.
Dr. Valoo has been providing couples therapy since 2001. She is trained in a range of couples therapy approaches including Emotion Focused Therapy.
Dr. Valoo provides a range of comprehensive psychological assessments for adults aged 18 years and older, including assessments for ADHD and Learning Disorders. She provides Psychodiagnostic Assessments to determine emotional impairments.
Dr. Valoo has provided training to practicum students and provides supervision to clinicians working towards registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
APPROACH
Dr. Valoo’s practice is governed by evidence-based assessments and treatments, current empirical research findings, and guidelines and laws set up by professional and regulatory organizations. An effective therapeutic relationship is developed via collaboration between client/s and Dr. Valoo toward openness, honesty, and a commitment to change. Dr. Valoo’s role is to facilitate the therapeutic process as her clients seek to make changes they believe are important to their functioning. She supports and encourages change in a safe and confidential therapeutic atmosphere by using an experiential treatment approach that incorporates cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, emotion focused therapy, gestalt therapy, redecision therapy, transactional analyses, and trauma focused therapy. Dr. Valoo attends to the uniqueness of her clients’ experiences, and the cultural context within which their uniqueness emerges. She endorses a strong emphasis on cultural sensitivity in the practice of psychology and attends to the complexities associated with issues of difference, diversity, cultural identity, sexual orientation, gender, and the social-political-cultural contexts that influence psychological problems.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Dr. Valoo is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario as a Clinical Psychologist and is duly qualified to practice clinical psychology. She holds a Master’s degree in Counselling from Gallaudet University, Washington DC, and a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree in Psychology from Fielding Graduate University. She holds a certificate in Parent-Infant Mental Health. She received training and conducted research in Emotion Focused Therapy under the supervision of Dr. Les Greenberg, Clinical Psychologist, at York University, where she completed her supervised practice. She is a member of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA).
Dr. Valoo provides psychological services at Markham Psychologists. She has provided psychological services in academic and private practice settings since 2008. She served as Contract Faculty in the Department of Psychology at York University from 2008-2018. Dr. Valoo practiced as a mental health professional and teacher prior to her career as a Psychologist. Her psychological practice is governed by the Canadian Psychological Association Code of Ethics and the Professional Standards of the College of Psychologists in Ontario.
ABOUT
Dr. Valoo was born in South Africa and began her career as a teacher of deaf students in South Africa. Prior to obtaining her doctorate degree in psychology as a midcareer professional, she trained and worked as a mental health professional for several years, providing services to deaf individuals in academic and social service settings in Canada and the United States. Dr. Valoo is passionate about lifelong learning, personal growth, and work-life balance. She is inspired in her practice as a psychologist and is enthusiastic about her family and friends, physical outdoor activities, travel, and pets.
